Jimmy Eat World vs. Taking Back Sunday

As the Slam Dunk resident DJ and all-round music enthusiast, I was tasked with picking my 10 favourite tracks from Slam Dunk Festival 2018 heavyweights Jimmy Eat World and Taking Back Sunday. This was a task I couldn’t wait to get in to, but admittedly took me quite a bit longer than I anticipated. The reason for this? Both band’s back catalogues a stacked full with such classic, enduring songs that made it really difficult to just pick 10. But eventually I did. And here they are:

Having DJ’ed ‘alternative’ club nights for nearly a decade, I tend to find that the big, stand-out singles are rarely my favourites. Don’t get me wrong, I love ‘Sweetness’ and ‘MakeDamnSure’ as much as the next person, but for this task I specifically went deep into the back catalogues and avoided the obvious singles to hopefully create a playlist that really shows the bands talents and I hope that it serves to either remind you just how good these bands are, or educate you on that fact.

I was lucky enough to grow up right at the time both bands exploded onto the alternative scene; Jimmy Eat World released ‘Bleed American’ in 2001, and Taking Back Sunday’s ‘Tell All Your Friends’ came a year later in 2002. Both are classic, timeless records that cemented my immediate and life-long love affair with these bands and emo in general. With careers spanning two decades, and constant, solid releases over those careers it clear that these two bands have become pillars of this genre and masters of their craft. I can’t wait to see what each of them have in-store for #SDF18! Maybe they’ll take some cues from my playlist…
